Pindari Glacier
Probably the best way of getting to know any land, it's people, it's culture and traditions. It is not be confused with mountaineering which is more technical and a pre planned affair.
Adi Shankaracharya, who cruised in the Himalayas in the 8th century A.D. was the pioneer who opened trekking routes in this part of
India.
The Pindari glacier can be reached via Bageshwar.Trekking in India is incomplete if you have not trekked Pindari Glacier. This world famous glacier is a trekkers paradise, as it is easier to visit than most other glaciers. This glacier is situated between snow capped Nanda Devi and Nandakot mountains. The river Pindari originates from this glacier. The glacier is at an altitude of 3353 m. The entire trekking tour route is Filled to the brim with natural beauty.
The mountain adventure season which till recently was confined to the summer months in this region; now covers almost the full year including winter. Contrary to somewhat widely held belief, a trek, mountaineering expedition, ski trip or river run does not require superhuman physical condition. What is essential is a love for the outdoors and respect for nature. If you're fired by the spirit of adventure, let the sparks in your heart fly in the hills of Kumaon, a land blessed with snowbound peaks, crystal glaciers,
rolling meadows
, jagged rock faces, scenic valleys, meandering rivers, cascading waterfalls, dense forests and hospitable people with rich culture. This has been made possible by improved equipment and transportation and the availability of the year-round bookings in the areas hitherto considered inaccessible.
The Pindari Glacier is a glacier found in the upper reaches of the Kumaon Himalayas, to the southeast of Nanda Devi. This world famous glacier is situated in the Pindera Valley at an altitude of 3353 m between the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot mountains. The glacier is a trekker's paradise, as it is one of the most easily accessible of all the Himalayan glaciers. The rugged beauty of the glacier presents an aweinspiring site. The glacier is 5 kms long, the snout is about 6m high and 2.5m wide and above the snout, the glacier extends for about 3kms in length and 300- 400m in width, between an altitudinal range of about 3600m to 5000m. The colour of Pindari Glacier is very white and Pinder river emerging from it is a sight to behold.
The base camp is at Saung which can be reached by road from Bageshwar (36 kms), Almora (109 kms), and Kathgodam (199 kms).
From Saung one has to trek 45 km upto zero point (Pindari Glacier).

Pindari trek presents nature in all its pristine glory, luring mountaineers and trekkers for more than a century. It follows the Pindari river to the glacial flows of Nanda Kot (6,861m) and Nanda Khat (6,611m), part of the southern rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, with stunning views of Trisul (7,120m) from the DhalKhal Pass (2,830m), a gateway to the Pindari Valley. The Pindari Glacier lies between the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot peaks and terminates at an altitude of 3,627m. The Glacier is 5 km long and extends for about 3 km in length and 300-400 m in width between an altitudinal range of 3,600 to 5,000 m. The trek passes through oak, forest glades of ferns, conifers, and tumbling waterfalls. The Pindari river has cut a gorge in thick glacial deposits which resulted in the formation of spacious glacial terraces spread
on both sides of the gorge.
At Khati, two days from the start of the trek, one can branch west to the Sunderhunga Glacier and the Maiktoli Glacier, a tough trek as compared to Pindari trek. Sunderdhunga means 'the valley of beautiful stones.' From Khati trail goes north to Pindari Glacier and northeast to the Kafni Glacier, a scenic and tranquil trek. From Kapkot before Khati, one can venture east via Sama, and from there northeast to Namik Glacier, a difficult side trip. At present we include treks to the other glaciers only under custom-designed tours.
