Auli
16 km from Joshimath Auli has a winter resort run by the State government outfit, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). The ski slope here is the most popular in the state and one of the few with ski lifts. The season starts from end December or January and extends up to March.
For adventure seekers visiting India, Auli presents a memorable winter sport and holidays experience. The snow-clapped peaks around Auli are ideal for indulging in snow skiing, snow boarding and snow expedition and a holiday in the Auli ski slopes could be any skier's delight.
To cater to visitors, Auli has now become a self-sufficient township, connected with other important center in the state.
Auli, has been easily adapted for families with children who may be to try on their skies yet. They enjoy the cable car rides and rope lifts, or spend the day outdoors building snowmen, or having snowfall fights ! The day so spent , the evening bring the excitement of warmth around fires, with a shared camaraderie. And the promise – should you wake early – of seeing the sun rise over the high snow - capped peaks , tingeing them a rosy pink than soon dissolves to a molten gold, before turning a dazzling white. It is a spectacle of light that is soon lost to the mists that swirl in the skies above. It is a wonderful way to begin the day.
It is a good place for beginners as GMVN conducts 7 and 14 days skiing courses at subsidised rates.. In the summer, Auli bugyal is inviting but in the winter it is irresistible with its hoary snow slopes and skiing facilities.
Auli can be reached by road or ropeway from Joshimath.
It provides an excellent panoramic view of the giant mountain peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet and Dunagiri. From January to March, the Auli slopes are usually covered with a thick carpet of snow, about 3 mts deep.
The stretch of 3 km with a drop in elevation of 500 meters is considered to be a very good skiing ground by international standard. The background of lofty snow clad mountains heightens the sprit of the skiers. To attract attention, skiing festivals are also conducted at Auli. These now include the national championships staged by the Winter Games Federation Of India.
While skiing is the chief attraction at Auli, there are other attraction like cable car rides and rope lifts, or spend the day outdoors building snowmen, or having snowball fights.
